Local History Department
Local History
The collection, preservation, and dissemination of the historical memory of Nea Filadelfeia – Nea Chalkidona.
Safeguarding and preserving the cultural heritage of a local community is one of the most essential responsibilities of local government. PPIED — which also houses the Museum of Asia Minor Hellenism “Filio Haidemenou” — took the initiative, as the cultural body of our Municipality, to carry out this mission.
By establishing a local history department at PPIED, we aim for this space to become the community’s foundation for collecting, preserving, safeguarding, and providing access to historical material.
Oral History "from Below"
In the summer of 2017, the Board of PPIED resolved to launch an initiative marking 90 years since the settlement of the Asia Minor refugees of 1922 in the then newly founded refugee quarter of Nea Filadelfeia (July 1927), with the ultimate aim of creating an audiovisual archive — free of copyright restrictions and usable in any research.
We wanted to give a voice to those who until now had remained voiceless about what happened in our community. This “from below” approach draws on the memory and experience of ordinary people, making them co-creators of local history.
What We Collect
Photographs, video, documents, archives or articles from the local press, municipal archives, invitations and posters, census records, minutes of municipal council meetings, maps, audio recordings, film material, family trees, diaries, postcards, architectural drawings, and paintings — with the aim of digitising them.
Research and Historical Album
The Board resolved to publish an album documenting the chronological development of the Municipality of Nea Filadelfeia – Nea Chalkidona, focusing on the major turning points and transformations of the 20th century. The research was undertaken by a team of historians and academics from the Contemporary Social History Archives (ASKI).
